Determination of CNC Machining Routes

 

The machining route of a CNC lathe refers to the path the tool travels from the reference point (or machine fixed origin) to the completion of the machining program, including both cutting paths and non-cutting travel paths such as tool entry and exit.

 

The feed paths for precision machining are usually along the contour of the part. Therefore, the key to determining the feed path is to establish it for rough machining and non-cutting travel.

 

In CNC lathe machining, the determination of machining routes generally follows the following principles:

 

  1. Ensure the accuracy and surface roughness of the workpiece.
  2. Minimize the machining route, reduce non-cutting travel time, and improve machining efficiency.
  3. Simplify the workload of numerical calculations and simplify the machining program.
  4. For some repeatedly used programs, subprograms should be used.

 

Advantages and Disadvantages of CNC

 

CNC machining has the following advantages:

 

  1. It significantly reduces the number of fixtures. Complex-shaped parts do not require complex fixtures. If the shape and size of the part need to be changed, only the part machining program needs to be modified, which is suitable for new product development and modification.
  2. Stable machining quality, high machining accuracy, and high repeatability, meeting the machining requirements of aircraft.
  3. In the case of producing multiple varieties and small batches, the production efficiency is higher, reducing the time for production preparation, machine adjustment, and process inspection. Moreover, it reduces cutting time by using optimal cutting parameters.
  4. It can machine complex surfaces that are difficult to process by conventional methods, and even some inaccessible machining areas.

 

The disadvantage of CNC machining is the high cost of machine tools and the requirement for maintenance personnel to have a high level of expertise.
